By now you are probably more than aware that some of the information that you can find on the internet should be taken with a pinch of salt. This can be especially true when it comes to the beauty market.

With the rise of makeup and beauty hacks that are popping up all over the place, we have consulted some experts who were able to clear up the truth about some of these hacks.

Replacing Limes With Your Deodorant

The idea of replacing lime with your deodorant, is rubbing the lime under your armpits and doing so thinking that this is earth friendly? But this could also take a turn for the worse as lime is acidic after all. This being in mind, limes can cause some skin irritation, redness burning and even in some cases scalding rashes.

Instead, just try regular deodorants or you can try using cleansing wipes and a light mist of your favourite fragrance if you in a bit of a pinch.

Mouthwash To Tackle Dandruff

There is actually no scientific data that supports using mouthwash to get rid of that pesky dandruff, in fact using mouthwash that has a strong base of alcohol could disrupt the skin barrier further also like the ingredients that are in most mouthwash products like Listerine ( menthol, methyl salicylate and eucalyptol).

Instead, try shampoo and condition regime that has zinc pyrithione in them as these are clinically proven to reduce the signs of dandruff .

Heels Or Knives To Contour

There is a long list as to why using your highest heels or your sharpest knives to contour out your face. But right at the top of that list is how unsanitary and frankly quite dangerous these can be whilst up against your face.

Instead, use literally anything else that has a sharp straight line. Here are some pure obvious suggestions that you can use: a ruler? A credit card? A piece of paper? And the list goes on.

Using Deodorant To Tackle Shine

Probably not a great idea! Antiperspirants work by blocking your sweat glands from producing any wetness but that doesn’t meant that they will do anything for your oil producing cells. For a really sweaty face then using a transparent antiperspirant can work but can always lead to your face having clogged pores and breakouts.

Instead, try and oil absorbing primer. And to prove that we aren’t above all those hacks out there, instead of buying blotting papers, use rolling papers.

Nappy Rash Cream For Spots

Whilst nappy rash cream can help with inflamed skin and it can also mellow a red angry spot, it’s not something that you should actually be smoothing your face in. For faces that are already sensitive, oil prone or acne prone, ingredient like zinc oxide, which can be found in some nappy creams, often can trigger more breakouts.

Instead, try and look for acne products that contain benzoyl peroxide, as this helps to fight against acne causing bacteria.

Cornstarch For Setting Powder

Baking, this is a technique that Youtube Vloggers love to do to set their makeup, help to create a poreless effect and also accent the highest points of their face, harmless although time consuming. Things took a turn after a Youtuber had recommended using cornstarch in place of your regular setting powder.

An MD has recommended not do this to your face and cornstarch is food to the yeast that is already on your skin.

Instead, leave the cornstarch in your cupboard and go pick yourself up a setting powder. If you’re in a cash crunch, use a light coloured matte eyeshadow to help set your concealer.
