Did you think that makeup lasts forever? Makeup does go off, due to the ingredients used within it, and all makeup types have their own shelf life depending on both the ingredients and storage. Using off makeup runs the risk of getting an infection, at the very least it can cause skin irritations and worst of all… spots.

This article by The Daily Mail even revealed that barely out of date makeup could cause you to harbour bacteria, including… get this… meningitis! Even one of the products that was tested, a lip gloss, was in date but still carried the deadly bacteria associated with skin conditions.

The same study revealed that same lip gloss to have the third highest bacteria count of all of the products tested, being a mouth related makeup it contains more bacteria due to what’s inside out mouth and even sharing lip gloss with others.

Germs are so easy to create and transfer, sharing makeup with friends increases the chances of bacteria more than tenfold. Follow the tips in the guide below to make sure that you know when to throw that old makeup away, plus some additional tips on how to keep them fresh.
