Girl’s everywhere aim for flawless skin, but it’s not always the easiest thing to achieve. We learn from an early age to use foundation to cover up discoloration, blemishes and dark circles.

Foundations come in multiple forms and brands, which makes it trickier to decide on what to use and how to use it. Here’s a step by step on how to use liquid foundation to achieve that flawless look.

Using a liquid foundation will give you a lightweight coverage that doesn’t look cakey and goes on smoothly to even out the texture of the skin. Perfect for that ‘no makeup’ look.

Cleaning:

Washing your face will make your skin look perfectly clean, ready for your makeup regime. Clean off any dirt residue from your face. Cleanse well to get rid of dead skin cells and excess oils.

Moisturising:

Apply a moisturiser that fits your skin type:

Dry/ Sensitive – Thicker cream locks in the moisture.

Oily – Water based lotions work best.

Normal – Cream moisturiser that’s hydrating.

Primer:

Depending on your skin type, you may need a little more prep work. If you have an oily skin type, apply an anti shine serum which will create a matte base first. If your skin is dry or you have combination skin, apply a light primer. Primers are golden which reduces the need for heavy foundation.

Foundation:

Put the liquid foundation onto the back of your hand and, with a clean fingertip, dab foundation over your face. Cover your forehead, cheeks, nose and your chin. Using this technique will ensure more of an even and spreadable coverage. Foundation looks much more like real skin when using a combination of fingers, brushes and sponges.

Applying:

Blend the foundation into the skin using a brush. Start at the bridge of your nose and work outwards, buffing residual product towards the cheeks. You can gauge your coverage after this step for your desired look. Although everyone’s skin is unlike no other, if you have a desired method of your own stick to that.

Blending:

Take a sponge, slightly damp, to blend the foundation down your neck, ears and your hairline to get rid of any obvious lines. Using a sponge for this step helps with the ability to spread out the makeup. The Beauty Blender is a great tool to have in your makeup bag for pressing foundation into your skin.

Concealer:

To mask any blemishes or under eye circles, don’t try covering them by matching your skin tone. For the reddish areas, use a concealer with more of a green undertone and for the under eye circles use a salmon tone which will offset the cooler hues.

Application:

When applying concealer do not wipe with your fingers. Massage and tap gently the concealer into your skin, ensuring it will stay put. Always apply concealer after your foundation, this is simply because once your foundation is on you can start noticing the imperfections. If you apply the concealer before your foundation it’s likely you will rub it off when applying your foundation.

Setting Powder:

To finish, use a loose setting powder that matches your natural skin tone. Apply the powder with a puff and pat over your face. Focus on the under eyes and blemishes that you want covered. This will set your makeup.

Bronzer/Blush:

Apply bronzer or a blush. Choose a bronzer that isn’t too dark for your skin colour. Using an angled brush to work in a cross your face. To make your face look slimmer, apply the bronzer under the apples of your cheeks. For the blush, find one that suits your skin tone and sweep across the apples of your cheeks.

Shine Prevention:

To prevent your face from becoming oily and shiny, use blotting sheets. They don’t disturb your makeup but do reduce shine and aren’t massively expensive!
