Benefit's Real Gel Eyeliner

I was pretty excited to hear about Benefit’s recent release of They’re Real! Gel Eyeliner. Having been a huge fan of their mascara, and the honest advertising – no lash inserts or post production enhancements on those lashes! A little pricier than I am used to (I was always a huge fan of the Rimmel mascaras until They’re Real hit the shelves).

So, I was ecstatic to see the pictures on my Facebook feed of the Carnaby Street launch and hotfooted it into town at the weekend to see what all the fuss was about.

Firstly I want to say how fab the Benefit girls were in the Colchester Debenhams – they showed me how to use it, made suggestions about the type of “wing” I should have on my eye and beautified me in general (obviously also making me want the following things on my next trip: Hula Bronzer (so good as not sparkly which I feel sits in my wrinkles), stay don’t stray primer (it really didn’t all day!) and eyeshadows with the cutest names!

When it came to putting on the eyeliner myself, however, I found it took a LOT of practice to get it right.

The acuflex tip (five years in development!) makes the gel come out really nicely but what you have to do (and what I didn’t in order to try not to waste any!) is to run it along your hand to make sure the line is the right thickness. Everyone kept saying that one click was enough for both eyes and I didn’t believe it. Also – they don’t mean click, I was expecting it to work like a touche eclat or a ballpoint pen but it TWISTS not clicks! However, one twist (carefully applied) WILL do both eyes!

The Benefit girls advised me to put on the liner in short sweeping strokes – I found this to be the best way.

I went out wearing it on Saturday night and when I came home it was all in the right place! No smudges. It dries really quickly but this is both a pro and con as whilst if you get it on right first time it stays but there is very little room for error or blending.

I think I will use this in place of my usual liquid eyeliner (Estee Lauder Double Wear) for a while, it’s almost exactly the same price and I like it but I’m not sure if I love it as much as my old faithful.

Summary

Great product but a little fiddly to apply.
